Kick starting your Summer of self-isolation with an infectious Nu Disco heater, bursting with joy and happiness to lead you through these uncertain times. This is the third of the Birdland releases, following last Summer’s funk filled care packages, with airplay Delia Tesileanu (Wah Wah 45s) on Soho Radio and Tina Edwards on Worldwide FM. Now, disco returns to provide not only light and love to the dancers of the world, but to raise money for those in need during this pandemic.

Cast your minds back to the noughties. A wondrous time for modern culture, birthing low-rise jeans, popped collars and the landmark videogame ‘GTA: Vice City’. Tommy Vercetti cruised the streets of Vice, soundtracked by the silky-smooth tones of Oliver “Ladykiller” Biscuit on Fever 105 FM. Here, I discovered a mesmerizing continuum of 80s grooves including The Whispers’ seminal anthem ‘And The Beat Goes On’. Yet it would take over a decade for me to discover the golden B side to this sensational hit. ‘Can You Do The Boogie’ has a simple message: get to the weekend, forget your cares and do the boogie. There ain’t no holding you down…

This heater channels the spirit of The Whispers’ message, rebirthing their silky vocals and spirit in a sweat-stained basement with no corners and buss buggin’ spiritual outer space voodoo dancing. There ain’t no escaping that groove bursting out the bass bins of your heart and into your soul, sweetened by future funk vibes and rolling kicks. Disco was birthed from hardship and strife, and the crisis of today’s world is no different. Yet Disco carried on undeterred, as will we: happy lovers united by the words of a sun-soaked soul group from a bygone era…

However, to groove is simply not enough. We need to stand by those in need at this time of crisis, as a soulful family with love on our sleeves. During this global pandemic, those who do not have a safe place to call home are forced into a lockdown that places them in immediate danger. Women and children are experiencing domestic abuse, sexual violence, forced marriage, ‘honour based’ abuse, child sexual abuse, FGM and other forms of violence. Therefore, all money raised from this release will be donated to Women’s Aid, a group dedicated “at the forefront of shaping and coordinating responses to domestic abuse.” Please consider this donation and give what you can.
